Peer Health Exchange Chief Operating Officer

Description:
Peer Health Exchange ("PHE"), is a national, non-profit organization that gives teenagers the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy decisions. We do this by training college students to teach a comprehensive health curriculum in public high schools that lack health education. Since our founding in 2003, PHE has trained more than 4,000 college student volunteers to deliver effective health education to more than 40,000 public high school students in New York City, Boston, Chicago, the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. In the 2010-2011 year, PHE is serving 15,000 teens and writing our next major strategic plan with the help of New Profit, Inc. and the Monitor Group, two significant investors. The plan will build off of PHE's successes to date and chart the course to increase impact dramatically in the years ahead.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer ("CEO"), the Chief Operating Officer ("COO") is the internal leader of PHE, working closely with the CEO to achieve PHE's goals. The COO will do this by overseeing the implementation of PHE's strategic plan, designing and managing internal systems, and supervising all internal operations, including programs, operations, finances, technology and human resources. This position is an ideal opportunity to play a key leadership role in managing, shaping and growing a national organization poised to have significant impact in the years ahead.
Responsibilities:
The Chief Operating Officer will be a key member of PHE's executive team. Specifically, he/she will:
- Partner with the CEO to achieve PHE's goals
- Oversee the implementation of PHE's strategic plan, ensuring alignment of efforts across the organization and refining the plan as necessary with staff and the Board
- Design and manage internal systems to track organizational progress and performance using a Balanced Scorecard
- Supervise all PHE operations, including programs, operations, finances, technology, and talent by managing staff leads in these core areas
- Support the CEO and Director of External Affairs in management of the Board, funders, and external partners as needed
Qualifications
PHE is looking for a dynamic, driven leader who:
- Has strong passion for PHE's mission to give teenagers the knowledge and skills needed to make healthy decisions
- Has a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; MBA or Master's degree in a related field preferred
- Has more than seven to ten years of progressively increasing operational management experience and strategic planning for a growing, multi-site organization
- Has excellent management skills including the ability to inspire, motivate, influence and hold staff accountable to significant standards
- Has experience leading, planning and managing in an entrepreneurial and growing organization
- Has demonstrated ability to develop, implement and manage business systems and processes to support a growing organization including budget development, human resources and technology
- Has strong strategic finance skills with basic accounting knowledge; advanced accounting skills not required
- Has exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Has excellent organizational skills and extreme detail-orientation
- Exercises excellent judgment in decision-making
