Peer Health Exchange Boston launched its operations in 2006, with significant support from the GreenLight Fund, which identifies innovative, high-performing nonprofits in cities and supports their successful expansion into the local community. For over ten years, PHE Boston has served more than 33,000 high school students and trained nearly 4,000 volunteer health educators.
All of our high school partners are considered low-income high schools based on over 51% of students being eligible for free or reduced fee lunch (across districts, 77% of these students were low-income). In total, our volunteer health educators led 990 health education workshops in Boston, Malden, Lynn, and Revere during the 2016-2017 school year. We provided modified accessing health resources units to the Boys and Girls Club’s Mattapan Teen Center after school. We’re expanding integration of our school-based health center tours with PHE Boston during the 2017-2018 year, and building relationships with local community health centers. We also intend to expand our partnerships in high schools and during out-of-school time in the future, to reach more young people and deepen the impact on students and their health.
